A historical day for Democrats in Spain
Armed Basque separatist group ETA has declared "the definitive cessation of all armed action" after four decades of bombing and shooting for a homeland independent of Spain.
The statement was issued in English on Basque newspaper Gara's website, potentially heralding the end of Western Europe's last major violent secessionist group, blamed for 829 deaths.
For several months, Northern Ireland's peace process has been used as the template for behind the scenes discussions in Spain.
Earlier this week, international negotiators - including former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, former British prime minister Tony Blair, Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams and former UN secretary general Kofi Annan - called on ETA to declare a definitive end to violence.
"We call upon ETA to make a public declaration of the definitive cessation of all armed action," Mr Ahern said after a one-day conference, which did not include the Spanish government or the outlawed ETA.
The Basque separatist group's statement read: "ETA considers that the International Conference that has recently taken place in the Basque Country is an initiative of enormous significance.
"The agreed resolution includes all the elements for an integral solution of the conflict, and it has attained the support of a wide spectrum of the Basque society and the international community.
"A new political time is emerging in the Basque Country. We have an historical opportunity to find a just and democratic solution for the centuries old political conflict.
"Dialogue and agreement should outline the new cycle, over violence and repression. The recognition of the Basque Country and the respect for the will of the people should prevail over imposition."
Elsewhere, Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, TD, urged Spain and France to accept today's announcement of a definitive end to armed activity by armed Basque separatists ETA, and agree to talks.
Adams said that the parties involved had to focus on reconciliation, victims and healing personal and social wounds caused by the violence, while Madrid needed to take confidence-building steps.

My routines and my friend
Hi!
My name is Pedro and I'm 15. I was born in Argentina and,
when I was 6 years old, I moved to Pamplona, Spain.
I like pop and rock music, and I love painting and hanging out with my friends.
I want to be a Graphic Designer.
Everyday I wake Up at 6:45 am, and I get up at 7 o'clock.
I put my clothes on and then I eat breakfast. At 7:25 am,
I catch the public bus to the School.
I have my first lesson at 8 o'clock and I finish school at 2:00 pm.
In the afternoon I usually study, but, on the Mondays I go to school for rehearsal teather.
Around 9 pm, I have a shower and next I eat dinner.
Finally, at 11:30 pm, I go to Bed.
At the weekends, I hang out with my friends, sometimes,
I hang out on Saturday nights. On Sunday afternoon I do my homework
and study, and then, I surf in the Internet.

Miguel Indurain, 25 years later
This is a collection of Indurain's career's photos
Today we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the birth of a new cycling star: Miguel Indurain Larraya. He was born in Villava, Navarra on 16th July 1964 and a day like today he won the Tour of the Future ( Tour del Porvenir ), which is considered the most important stage cycling race for young cyclists. Cyclists like Iñaki Gaston, Carlos Hernández, Eduardo Gonzalez Salvador, Guillermo Arenas, Alvaro Fernandez and Hernandez Ubeda were mates at that winner team.
At that time nobody expected that that tall crampy cyclist would become a five-Tour winner, two Giro-winner, Olympic Gold medalist, World Champion,.. and the idol of many people in Navarra. He was 20 when he won that tour. I was 15 and studying at the institute and started cycling with my friend Jose Ramon, who was also a young cyclist at the Villaves Cycling Club ( Club Ciclista Villavés ) , and I can say that these men are special when they are on the bike, as you have to learn to suffer and recover from the worst moment of their lives.
I think that José Miguel Echeverria, Eusebio Unzue and Francis Lafarge deserve our admiration as they foresaw a future winner when other people thought that Miguel Indurain should change his hobby, cycling, for basketball or athletics as he was very tall and well-built. Indurain was considered a very heavy-weight man for a mountain stage at the Tour, but his lungs and heart made a powerful motor for his legs.
Reynolds was that Navarrian cycling team, as a famous sport radio speaker, Jose Maria Garcia, used to say when an old Arroyo and those young Julian Gorospe and mature Perico Delgado were the stars and we gathered around Paseo Sarasate at the stands of Caritas ( La Tombola ) to get an autograph of our idols. I got the signatures of all the cyclists of that previous year in 1985, after Delgado's victory in La Vuelta, and one which I keep is Miguel Indurain's.
Before he became famous, Miguel Indurain thought that his future was in his parents' farm and to become a farmer. But his effort and the confidence of other people on him made us enjoy cycling in the 90's. He had to leave his studies of mechanics to dedicate his efforts to cycling. Most cyclist don't have a very brilliant career and they always regret leaving their studies at university or post-obligatory. Therefore, they usually recommend children to study hard at schools. They are very good expert on what effort means!!!
Later, in the summer of 1991 Miguel Indurain will show how his effort came true and got his first Tour, but that is another story I will tell you one day!!
Thanks Miguel, SIR MIGUEL INDURAIN ( as he would have been awarded if he had been born in England, sure! )

50th Anniversary of Hemingway's suicide

This year is the 50th anniversary of Hemingway's death, almost a week before of the start of his most loved festival, Sanfermines, which have been made famous worldwide thanks to the American writer.
His wife and himself arrived in Pamplona in 1923 for first time, when Ernest Heminway was working as a correspondent in Europe for the Canadian newspaper Toronto Star.
From the very beginning, Hemingway was shocked by the atmosphere of Sanfermines and he realized it was the most awesome festival in the world. He was right, as he used to, because Sanfermines is unique in the world and the only way to say that is to live the fiesta in Pamplona.
Hemingway arrive in Pamplona to discover the truth as part of an article to describe the madness of running in front of six bulls in the streets of a lost city, Pamplona, in the north of a semi-known country, Spain. The author of the Sun also rises not only saw that it was right, but he also found something else, much more than the expected.Thenceforth, Ernest fell in love ,like a mad lover, with our festival, he could ever forget them and he visited us eight more times.
“The sun also rises” (“Fiesta”)is published in 1926, and as any Navarrian must know, inspired and starred in the Sanfermines of those years. It is considered his first best-seller, even when that word was not in use that period, and made Sanfermines become famous worldwide.
The Literature nobel prize winner of 1954 was year after year more famous in the city and we paid tribute to his figure in Pamplona too. When Ernest Hemingway visited Pamplona, he used to stay in Hotel La Perla, in Plaza del Castillo. Now you can also stay in the famous room 217 and see the encierro live.
Now a guiri, the well-known word to define the foreigner in Sanfermines, can visit places in Pamplona like the tavern El Txoko, café Iruña or Torino thanks to the famous novel of Hemingway. There the writer used to meet his friends to eat and drink the tipical Navarrian products.
He never ran in front of the bulls, as most of his fellow countrymen do now, what they should avoid for the best of the Sanfermines. Anyway, he enjoyed the view of the running of the bulls from the kitchen of the old Hotel Maisonnave in the famous Estafeta street, and of course, he watched the bullfighting in the Pamplona bull ring.
We can't know how famous Sanfermines would be if Hemingway hadn't discovered for the entire world in 1923, but it is clear that without the author of "Fiesta" Sanfermines would not be the same nowadays.
